What to Say When Your Child Makes a Mistake

Quick Answer

When your child makes a mistake, stay calm, name what happened without shame, and help them fix it: "Oops, the milk spilled. Let's get a towel." Ask what they could try next time. How you react teaches them whether mistakes are scary or a normal part of learning.

What it looks like by age

  1. 4

    Age 4

Needs help cleaning up and fixing; looks to your face to see if it's okay.

  2. 5–6

    Age 5–6

Can help fix mistakes and suggest what to do differently.

  3. 7–8

    Age 7–8

Can reflect on mistakes and make a plan for next time.

Why it happens

Children watch adults to learn how serious mistakes are. Calm responses make it safer to try, learn and admit when something goes wrong.

What to say

  • "Oops! Mistakes happen. How can we fix it?"

  • "Thanks for telling me. That was honest."

  • "What could you try differently next time?"

  • "Everybody makes mistakes — even grown-ups."
